Latest FTC Case in "Operation Cure.All" Focuses on
Safety Risks of Comfrey Products Promoted Via
Internet
The Federal Trade Commission
today is announcing an additional case challenging the marketing of
unproven and dangerous products via the Web. The target of today's
action is Christopher Enterprises, Inc., a manufacturer and marketer of a
variety of products containing the herbal ingredient comfrey, for both
external and internal uses.
Comfrey and Other Herbs that Contain Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids

Most cases of pyrrolizidine alkaloid toxicity result in moderate to severe liver
damage. Gastrointestinal symptoms are usually the first sign of intoxication, and
consist predominantly of abdominal pain with vomiting and the development of ascites.
On the Christine McPhee show "Total Health" on February 25, 2000 she interviewed
someone from a health food store on the Danforth in Toronto who said that comfrey
was safe. Is she crazy!?
