- A company located in the Aruba in the Dutch Antilles has recently advertised a product containing:
Ch. green hyson (70%) and xiao hui xiang (30%)
They say that this combination is used as an aid to weight loss. They make absolutely false claims for the effect of these herbs. The ads appeared in Canadian Coupon Clipper supplements on Saturday March 28, 1998. The company has a mailbox fullfillment center and is doing business as:
Aebion
4936 Yonge St., Suite 261
North York, Ontario, M2N 6S3
Canada
The address given for the parent company is:
Mr. Wim de Vrijer
Aebion Worldwide Trading A.V.V.
Sun Plaza, Suite 306
Lloyd G. Smith Blvd. 160
Oranestad
Aruba
Dutch Antilles
The publisher of the Coupon Clipper:
FSI Canada

The phone number for ordering in Canada, 1-888-291-8885 is nothing more than a phone shop. They had only minimum information on the herbs. I then was given the name of someone who works for DGA (David Geller Agency) who puts these deals together. Kathleen Irish who works for DGA told me that she would have someone contact me from the U.K. As it turned out, the company that she claims is behind the scam is actually the one in Aruba. Kathleen Irish's phone number is 905-470-0560, and their fax number is 905-470-0561. I suggest that anyone who wants to should call her, and find out what other fine products that DGA represents.
I told her that an official complaint had already been filed with the Federal government because of the health claims that Aebion was making. One of the herbs is nothing more than fennel, according to several sources that I have contacted. Certified practitioners in several areas of the North America and Asia have e-mailed me with their opinions about the company marketing the product.
In the ad it showed an oriental woman who said "I lost 64 lbs. in 10 weeks" and there was a testimony that the two pictures that appeared in the ad were actual and unretouched. The product claims to eliminate 91% of the absorbed sugars, prevent 93% of fat absorption, doubles your metabolic rate to burn calories fast, and last but not least helps you stop snacking between meals.
This type of fraud, in full color, and mixed in to a large newspaper with other ads, like L'Oreal and major Canadian companies is absolutely hazardous to people's wallets and may be harmful to their health.
Anyone who has information about Chinese Diet Teas of any kind, let me know. They are charging $70 Canadian for a three month trial. We'd like to organize a class action suit against the company, but need to know how many suckers actually sent them money first.
According to my sources, the Aebion company is also selling Diet Patches all over the world. It's just another fraud. Here is just one e-mail on the Deja News service:
"I saw the ad in a Ladies Home Journal. It said 30 patches for $29.95. Apply a new patch every morning. It's suppose to curb your cravings and increase your metabolism up to 30 lbs in 30 days. I know it sounds too good to be true. The ph # is 800-827-4661. I don't know if it works. I was hoping someone else had tried it before I waste my $ again."
Please send any questionable diet ads in your local paper or magazines from this company. Include the date, the name of the publication, and we will scan them in and forward them to the proper department at the Bureau of Competition of Industry Canada. Please send them even if the ads were in non-Canadian publications. American and other foreign magazines are everywhere. If we don't know that the scams are out there, we won't be able to complain.
